1649 Indian Lands Patented
In 1649, a trio of Patents were issued by Govenor Berkeley for “Island Field” which was know for this period of time as “Warranuncock Island.” The owners of these patents seemed to be given to wealthy land tycoons or to captains for transporting people to the Colonies. A parcel of land tends to get named by the first people to live on the property. These Names do not get associated with the properties, so I assume they never lived here. This indicates that the Indians were gone by 1649 from both “The Island” and Fort Royall.
“To all et Whereas et Now Know you that the said for Gov William Berkeley et give and grant unto an John Holding Eight hundred and fifty acres of land known by the name of Warranuncock Island lying in the York River and in the County there of bounded round with two great swamps one of them dividing it from Col. Honneywoods and the other from Mr. Jerernew’s land lying on the North  side of the river the said land going unto the said John Holding by end for the transportation of seventeen persons into the colony …February 1649”
