Which is the Island ?
“The Island”
Horse
Shoe Island is only an island at mid-high tide. And
“The Island” isn’t really an island either.
But if you have been told there is an island
here due to John Smith’s description of an
island, and a land feature called “the Island” is reported
to be in this exact location in all previous maps,
and then you see this island looking shape peninsula
with creek openings at either side, it is
logical to call the horse shoe an island. Differing
definitions of what makes an island combined
with the shift from verbal descriptions to
eyeballing to aerial photographs has created the
legacy that mapmakers have drawn different
islands here throughout history even though non
really exist.
