2006 “The Island” is recognized as Opechancanough’s headquarters
The Opechancough marker stems from an effort between the Department of Historic Resources and the Virginia Historical Society with the Virginia Indian community and the Virginia Council to erect ten new signs commemorating Virginia's legacy ofVirginia Indian history.
These are the only 10 signs ever paid for by DHR itself. “The Island” is also part of a large battle between Newport News Reservoir and the Pamunkey Indians. “The island” has an option on it to be converted to wetlands for mitigation to offset the wetlands destroyed in building the reservoir.
“The site of Opechancanough's home on the Pamunkey River has long been called The Island.”
